American composer Larry Thomas Bell (b. 1952) was born in North Carolina and was educated at East Carolina University, and Appalachian State University, before completing graduate degrees at the Juilliard School where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions. He has received much acclaim for his work and was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (1981), the Rome Prize (1982–83), and a Rockefeller grant (1985). Bell has lived for more than four decades in Boston where he has taught at the Boston Conservatory, the New England Conservatory, and the Berklee College of Music. His large output as a composer includes an opera, several symphonies, and numerous chamber, choral, vocal, and solo works—especially pieces for piano, Bell’s own instrument.
