This program is played on the sample set of the so called 'Bach organ': the Wender organ (1703), Neue Kirche, Arnstadt, released by Sonus Paradisi. At this church, on this very organ, Bach got his first job as organist, at the age of 18. That's quite the fascinating thought.
Therefore, to present this sample set I picked organ and keyboard pieces from the young Bach. These works are most likely composed when he was at Mühlhausen, Arnstadt and Weimar. It's very interesting to hear these pieces on this organ.
In this organ you notice influences from different organ schools, for example the North German and Thuringian organ schools. Both schools were important in the development of Bach as a composer. The organ doesn't have a big disposition and certainly not a standard one. But the richness of 8' and 4' flue stops and a beautiful Sesquialtera and Cornet 2' certainly make up for that.
It's quite exciting to play this program on the model of this organ. Especially the pieces which most certainly were composed while Bach was organist at Arnstadt. It feels like being very close to how Bach wanted his music to sound. But the question remains, like always... would Bach approve?
