Antoine Toulmonde (1902-1993) was a Belgian organist, composer and pedagogue.
Like several other young graduates of the Lemmens Institute , he went to Ireland where he taught at Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare .
A music teacher at Saint-Joseph College in Virton , he composed liturgical music including a mass for a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Avioth in 1970.
He also worked in collaboration with the Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Orval .
He died at the age of 91. A recording of some of his compositions was made on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.
"In Ireland - Four Impressions" was published by A. Ledent-Malay in 1930. The works are quite modern and "involved" in terms of execution.
The second impression, "Regret" is dedicated: "To my friend Matthew J. Keogh." The music is quite intense and satisfying, but in an unusual way. There are elements of modality at times, but in some sections, there is much more dissonance, even reminding me somewhat of the works of Vierne.
I believe "In Ireland" was Toulmonde's only published work for solo organ.
The score of the pieces is attached below, as well as photos of Clongowes Wood College and of the Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Orval.
