Visa (Stanza?) Op 18 no 4 Visa 1888-90 dedicated to Wilhelm Stenhammar.
This is a piano piece and I'm using it as an introduction to Hägg as his organ music is not in IMSLP and not readily available.
Gustaf Wilhelm Hägg Swedish composer and organist.
Born 28 November 1867 Visby
Died 7 February 1925 in Stockholm.
After studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music Hägg was employed as acting organist at Clara Church in Stock- holm 1891. He then became a permanent organist two years later and soon began giving regular organ concerts, which led him to becoming one of the foremost organists in the country. He remained in the job until his death.
He was employed in 1904 as a teacher of organ and harmony at the Royal Conservatory of Music where he influenced many musicians and organ building and restoration.
He received a national composer’s grant for the years 1897 to 1900, which made it possible for him to reside in German and Paris where he came into contact with Widor and Guilmant. Aside from organ music he devoted himself to composing chamber music and wrote among other works, a string quartet, a string sextet & a piano trio.
Gustaf Hägg became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1915.
