Andrew Carter was born in Leicestershire in 1939 and studied music at Leeds University. He moved to York and sang bass in the choir at the Minster. His best-known compositions are arguably his setting of A Maiden Most Gentle and the Toccata on Veni Emmanuel.
This gentle piece, originally written for handbells, but arranged by the composer, is from the same collection as the latter.
Forest Green is the name given to an English folk tune, collected and adapted by Vaughan Williams for the English Hymnal and used to replace the existing tune of the carol, O little town of Bethlehem.
