Anyone who's been in an English cathedral just before a service begins will recognise the typical English cathedral organist improvisatory style in this piece, if only from the chord progression in the second bar
The Londonderry Air is gloriously schmaltzy, and Rawsthorne's treatment plays to that quality. For me, if it were a cinema film track it'd be the closing shots of an old-style film where we see the heroes in soft focus gazing misty-eyed past the camera into the distance as they return from their adventure, success only won at some cost ... and it fades to the credits.
