Description:
Whitlock composed the Plymouth Suite in 1937, dedicating the individual pieces to organists from the Bournemouth and Plymouth locality. The Toccata is dedicated to Dr Harold Moreton, borough organist of Plymouth, who Whitlock describes as 'a sprightly old fellow who has been shabbily treated by the corporation'. The piece, in B minor, is in the French toccata style and gradually builds to a climax with those stunning last 4 chords.
