Christopher Gibbons (1615 – 1676) was an English organist and composer of the early Baroque period. The second son of the composer Orlando Gibbons, he was organist to the Chapel Royal and later of Westminster Abbey.
This ‘Verse for ye Single Organ’ is in a manuscript in the chained library at Wimborne Minster in the UK.
The first section of this piece shows some influence of the Italian Toccata per l’elevazione and provides good examples of the Scotch snap - a very short accented note played on the beat followed by a longer note. The second half of the piece has more imitation and is flamboyant with its vigorous left hand writing.
