Another "accidental" recording and upload of one of Thalben-Ball's hymn variations. It's very different from Wolvercote uploaded earlier. Indeed, if I didn't know otherwise, I'd have been very surprised to learn who it was by; to my ears it's very untypical.
The tune Martyrdom is sung to the hymn, As pants the hart for cooling streams. It was written by Hugh Wilson, a Scottish shoemaker who studied enough to become a part-time teacher. His adaptations of psalm tunes have nearly all been lost as he instructed that his manuscripts should be destroyed on his death. Fortunately this is one of the survivors.
