Joseph-François Kremer (b. 1954) — Les trois étapes temporelles (1974) for organ
“Les trois étapes temporelles” (1974), whose title in English means “The Three Temporal Stages,” is cast in the forum of three meditations. Two outer, slow meditations surround a brief, faster inner one.
French composer and musicologist Joseph-François Kremer (b. 1954) was born in Lyon. He studied composition primarily with Claude Ballif. Kremer has written several books on musical subjects including the symbolic forms of music, musical aesthetics, and music theory. He was the editor for the first French re-issues (in the 1980s) of Rameau’s treatises on harmony and theory (from the 1720s). From 1987 to 1994, he was director of the Contemporary Music Ensemble Intervalles. Kremer has served as professor of philosophy and musical aesthetics at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and as the director of the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud in Antony (Île-de-France). His numerous works as a composer include music in many genres, including four symphonies, other orchestral works, and much chamber and solo music.
