American composer, organist, and pianist Jon Spong (1933–2006) was a native of Iowa and was educated at Drake University. He held church positions in Des Moines, Philadelphia, and Iowa City and taught at Washington State University, Angelo State University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Cincinnati, Drake University, and Luther College. From 1964 to 1999, Spong was the accompanist to leading operatic baritone Sherrill Milnes with whom he toured the world in concert. As a composer, Spong wrote numerous works primarily for organ and choir which were widely published.
