The song is from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn". There are two Years indicated: The words were recorded in 1806 and the quite pleasing melody 1818.
The text consists of so-called wandering verses, i.e. some of the Motifs and phrases are also found in other songs. In song is between the first verse and the two
subsequent strophes do not recognize a necessary connection, while these
tell a coherent little story in their turn.

The melody is a recorded folk tune.

We hear 3x2 verses on the beautiful Melcer Chamber Music Hall organ.
