Gisbert Steenwick's music is certainly underrated. Born in Arnhem in 1642, he was organist here until 1674. Then he moved to be organist in Kampen where in died in 1679. He was only 37 years old.
He certainly wrote in Arnhem a compilation for one of his pupils : Anna Maria van Eijl. It's the only source of Steenwick's music. Only 9 pieces are clearly named. Others could be reasonably attributed. I decided to record only these 9 pieces on the beautiful sample of Nijkerk. It is well suited to the melancholy and sensitive character of some pieces, but it doesn't lack power when it's needed. Fast all pieces are variations. I hope you will forgive me one or two barely audible wrong notes.
