John Newell (b. 1949) — Offering (1993) for organ
American composer John Newell (b. 1949) was born in North Carolina and was educated at Duke University, the California Institute of the Arts (with Mel Powell), and SUNY Buffalo (with Morton Feldman.) After finishing his PhD in 1979, he moved to Western Massachusetts where he worked as a music teacher (for Mt. Greylock Regional High School, the Berkshire Music School, and Berkshire Community College) and for more than 20 years as organist and music director of First Congregational Church of Worthington, Massachusetts. During this period, he was also manager of training and professional development for Berkshire Life Insurance Company. He later settled in Maine where he continued to teach and serve as music director of Christ Church in Eastport. As a composer, Newell has written music in numerous genres that has been performed through the USA. As a conductor, Newell is the founding director of the Quoddy Voices, a choral ensemble.
