Description:
J. Frank Frysinger (1878–1964) was an American organist who was a student of Ralph Kinder (American) and William Wolstenholme (English).

Most of his career was centered in Pennsylvania and Illinois, although he worked in Nevada as well.

He composed about 20 organ works, some of which were very popular in his day.

"Vesperale" was published by The Willis Music Company in 1918. It is dedicated: "To Mr. Sibley G. Pease."

It uses Joseph Barnby's famous evening hymn, "Now the day is over" as its inspiration.

In his day, Sir Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) was a musician of great importance. Now, we look back and smile at some of his "masterpieces"!

His hymn-tune, "Merrial" is still greatly loved by many, and while I admit that there was a time that I did not like, I now accept it for what it is. The tune is linked to the words composed by the Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924).

At the top of the score, the first verse is given:

Now the day is over
Night is drawing nigh,
Shadows of the evening
Steal across the sky.

The hymn is first played on the chimes, followed by a piece that probably falls more in the "theater category," but whether you want to call this theatrical or sacred, I must tell you the I loved doing it!

I'm especially pleased to dedicate this to our member, "Jerry314159". I'm always prodding him to stop saying that things are "pleasant"!

Well, Jerry, I think you'll find this one to be EXCEPTIONALLY pleasant! It is sent to you with friendship, prayers and ALL good wishes, and I hope you like it!

The score is attached below, as well as two photos of Frank Frysinger, two of Joseph Barnby, and one of Sabine Baring-Gould.
