Canadian composer Barrie Cabena (b. 1933) was born in Melbourne, Australia and educated at the Royal College of Music in England with John Dykes Bower (organ), William Lloyd Webber (theory), Herbert Howells (composition), and Eric Harrison (piano). From 1957–75 he was music director at First St. Andrew’s Church in London, Ontario, Canada. In 1970 he joined the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University where he taught organ and church music until his retirement in 1996. An extremely prolific composer, Cabena’s output includes more than 500 works in many genres, including an enormous body of organ music that encompasses 70 solo sonatas and numerous other suites and individual pieces.
