The powerful figure of the toccata is contrasted with the church tonal melody of the chorale.
The two middle parts of the toccata as well as the fugue are composed of dense polyphonic play.
Toccata and fugue end in an empty chord (only root and fifth), the concluding chorale movement ends conciliatory in major.
