Frederick William Wadely OBE FRCO (1882 - 1970) was born in Kidderminster in 1882, and was trained at the Royal College of Music and was then organ scholar at Selwyn College, Cambridge (1900 – 1903) then organist of St. Andrew’s Church, Uxbridge (1903-1904), organist of Malvern Priory (1904 - 1910) and finally organist of Carlisle Cathedral (1910 - 1960).
We might find hints in his music of Edward Elgar and it is interesting to note that Wadely married Ethel Muriel Stokes, who was a school friend of Elgar's daughter Carice. F.W. Wadely's father, William Edward Wadely, received Organ lessons at Worcester Cathedral from E. Spray, from whom Elgar received organ lessons at about the same time. No wonder Dr Wadely is sometimes called 'The Elgar of the North'!)
This is a transcription of the Prologue from his orchestral music for the Carlisle Historical Pageant of 1928. Wadely was asked to provide the transcription in 1966 by a pupil, William Coulthard (who was for many years Organist of St Bees Priory in Cumbria), who was doing a local organ recital. This manuscript is preserved in the 'Prior's Tower Archive' at Carlisle Cathedral, where there are two large archive boxes devoted to Wadely.
