Now in this movement we get really medieval - this whole piece is based on Gregorian plainchant. It is a set of variations on 'Puer Natus Est Nobis' - the Introit to a Christmas mass. With its many 2 and 3 part canons based on ancient texts this music has a strange and haunting beauty, far from the Widor most of us know. But then there emerges a brilliant and thrilling toccata......turn up the volume and enjoy....
