Description:
Adrian Connell (b. 1964) — Concertino in C major (2019) for organ

1) Prelude
2) Ground Bass
3) Minuet and Trio
4) Celebration Rondo

The composer writes: “This work was commissioned by Christoph Dohr in celebration of him commissioning a new box organ to be built to add to his vast collection of keyboard instruments. The work is in four movements and is celebratory in nature. The work starts firmly in C major with a simple three-part prelude, where the opening gesture returns in the concluding section in the left hand. The second movement is a short interlude in A minor which is built upon a ground bass, with just five variants. The third movement is in G major and is a minuet and trio. There is a shortened return of the minuet where the theme of the minuet is presented, as in the first movement, in the left hand, before the full minuet returns. The last movement is a celebratory rondo back in the home key of C major. The rondo melody is a jaunty twelve-bar tune with two episodes and a coda where the opening theme of the entire work is heard to bring the work to a conclusion before the rondo has the last say.”

English composer Adrian Connell (b. 1964) started writing music when he was 11, writing and arranging for his school’s bands. In addition to activities as a composer, he has worked in the music publishing business and has been active as conductor, bass guitarist, and editor. Connell’s output as a composer includes six symphonies, two concerti, numerous other orchestral works, and many works for smaller ensembles. Adrian Connell has also produced orchestrations of choral repertoire including works by Parry, Stanford, Maunder and Fauré and new editions of works by Schubert and Elgar.
