Diana Burrell (b. 1948) — Fragment I (2000) for organ
English composer Diana Burrell (b. 1948) was born in Norwich and was educated at Cambridge University. She first came to widespread attention with the premiere in 1980 of her large-scale “Missa Sancte Edeliente,” a powerful and striking 50-minute work for chorus and orchestra. The success of the mass led to many commissions for chamber, orchestral, choral, and solo works by a wide range of distinguished ensembles and ensembles. In addition to many works for professional musicians, Burrell has been very involved with the organization CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) that seeks to bring about new works for amateur performers. Burrell has also served as artistic director for the Spitalfields Festival and the Harwich Festival. She has written of the need for “strong, rough-edged things, brave disrespectful shapes and sounds…” as much a reference to her love of modern architecture as a declaration of her compositional creed.
