Description:
Alistair Hinton (b. 1950) — Festal Fanfare, op. 45 (2005) for organ

Scottish composer Alistair Hinton’s (b. 1950) early work attracted the attention of Benjamin Britten, with whose advice and help he attended the Royal College of Music in London for lessons with Humphrey Searle and Stephen Savage. However, the most important facet of his musical development was provided by the music of and his friendship to the idiosyncratic English-Parsi composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892–1988). Hinton was instrumental in persuading Sorabji in 1976 to relax the long-standing embargo on public performances, and he began efforts to foster further interest in performances and recordings of Sorabji’s music. The Sorabji Archive was founded as the research entity and respository for all of Sorabji’s materials, which Hinton curated in the years following Sorabji’s death. Hinton’s own output as a composer includes various large-scale pices in varied genres, including a great deal of piano music. Artists who have performed his music include pianists Donna Amato, Ian Brown, Carlo Grante, Jonathan Powell, Yonty Solomon, Ronald Stevenson, and Nicola Ventrella; sopranos Sarah Leonard and Jane Manning; and organist Kevin Bowyer.
