"Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz" Uploaded by: Grandjeux Composer: Krebs, Johann Ludwig Organ: Laurenskerk - Transept Organ - 1959 Marcussen & Son Software: Hauptwerk IV Views: 249
Zachow's prelude to "Warum betrübst du dich mein Herz" (LV 52) consists of two seperate movenements in manuscript Mus ms 40037. In the catalogue of Zachow's compositions they are listed under the same entry, LV 52. Nevertheless I think they are not meant as a coherent whole, just two different compositions Zachow based on the same chorale melody. The first one is a manualiter piece, with the chorale melody in the soprano voice. The second one features the chorale melody in the bass voice, played with the pedals. They both show Zachow's talent for creating samall gems out of a chorale melody.
As they are indexed together in the catalogue of Zachow's compositions, I present them in one score, and play them both in my performance. In practical use they can perfectly be played seperately. And even in concerts there is no need to play them both. They can both stand very well on their own.
