Composer: Zachow, Friedrich Wilhelm
Sample Producer: Voxus Virtual Organs
Sample Set: Van Deventer 1756, Nijkerk
Software: Hauptwerk IV
Genre: Baroque
Description:
The full first phrase of this choral reads "Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, der von uns den Gotteszorn wandt" (Jesus Christ, our Savior, who turned God's wrath away from us). Martin Luther wrote it around 1524 for communion. The full title is a bit long, but it cannot abbreviated to "Jesus Christus unser Heiland" as that would lead to confusion with that other Lutherian hymn "Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, der den Tod überwand" (English: Jesus Christ, our Saviour, who conquered death). That one is a bit more well known and is the one usually abbreviated as "Jesus Christus, unser Heiland".

Manuscript Mus ms 40037, owned by the Staatsbibliothek Berlin, contains 5 chorale preludes to "Jesus Christus, under Heiland, der von uns". At least three of them were composed by Zachow. The one designated as LV 19 in the Lohman catalogue is in the manuscript indicated as "Alla breve". Yet it isnotated in ordinary 4/4-time. Each of the four phrases of the choral melody gets a fugato treatment.
