Description:
Jean-Paul Frisch was, born October 29, 1945 in Zell, and died 27 April 2013. He was an amateur composer, a conductor, and a Musekspedagog at the Central Conservatory.

"Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" is the 2nd of "Drei Choräle zu Weihnachten. It is a sweet and gentle setting, which seems to float in the vast acoustics of Utrecht. The light syncopations of the inner voices, make for an ethereal effect that gives a "shimmer-like" feeling to the well-loved and ancient melody.

The harmonies are traditional, but not pedestrian in any way, and the overall mood is one of restrained dignity and beauty.

This is my 1200th upload here on the Concert Hall. :-)

The score is attached below, as well as a photo of the composer, Jean-Paul Frisch.

This work is part of my on-going daily uploads starting with the first day of Advent, and running all the way through the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6.

Tomorrow's posting will feature a modern English "Carillon," based upon the same ancient melody of "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen." The mood of this ultra-rare work is very different from this chorale.

Another interesting feature about tomorrow's upload is that the work has strong connections with Salisbury Cathedral!
