Description:
Carl Sattler was born in Cologne in 1871. After his studies at the school of music in Cologne he became organist at St. Maria Himmelfahrt in 1892 and concert organist at the Cologne Philharmonic in 1899. In 1906 he changed to St. Maria im Kapitol, where he got a large 4 manual late romantic Seifert organ under his fingertips. Unfortunately, this instrument was destroyed in WW II. Sattler died in 1938. He was well-known for his magnificent improvisations, many of which became the basis for his compositions. His music is only rarely played today.
The sonata op.17 is subtitled „for reed organ or organ“. The score is available from B-Note publishers or from Butz publishers. I have put parts of the bass line into the pedals and tried to follow his registrations for the reed organ as far as possible. The clarinet of the Ladegast is used as a chorus reed to imitate the sound of a reed organ.
