One of three chorale preludes. This one published in 1940 on the tune Canterbury or Song 13 by Orlando Gibbons (1623). Orlando Gibbons (1583 - 1625) was born in Cambridge, studied at King’s College and was organist at the Chapel Royal. He died suddenly in Canterbury at age 41 and there is a monument to him at the Cathedral there. This tune is often used for the words by Samuel Longfellow ‘Holy spirit truth devine’,
Dr A. E. Floyd was born in Aston, Birmingham in 1877 and after education and work in the UK came to Australia to take up the position of organist and Choir Director at St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne. He was there for over 30 years and wrote a number of anthems, hymns and voluntaries. As well as being a music critic for the Argus, he presented Music Lovers Hour on ABC radio for 24 years. He died in Melbourne in 1974.
