Description: | This is one of Pachelbel's larger choral preludes.
He composed right through every sentence of the chorale. There are more verses, but this is the one he used.
As the choral melody is prominent in the pedal part throughout with imitatory motifs in the manuals, I played it in in the style of a grand Bach prelude. Aus Tiefer Not from the Clavierubung for instance.
The composer himself did not offer hints as to registration or tempo.
O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß,
darum Christus sein's Vaters Schoß
äußert und kam auf Erden;
von einer Jungfrau rein und zart
für uns er hier geboren ward,
er wollt der Mittler werden.
Den Toten er das Leben gab und tat dabei all Krankheit ab,
bis sich die Zeit herdrange, dass er für uns geopfert würd,
trüg unsrer Sünde schwere Bürd wohl an dem Kreuze lange. |
