Description: | It's been quite awhile since I've posted or even listened to anything... :-(
I'm in the midst of the High Holy Days, and while I have been recording some things, I'm struggling with nerve pain, and feeling sort of depressed.
This song/hymn is a very famous one, with all the appeal that a "real" folk melody should have. Some of you may even know this tune, as it's quite famous.
I just played this as if I were playing for a large, singing congregation. In listening to the playback, it's probably a bit "heavy" with the 16's in the manual, but it's quite powerful in the effect. This is sung many times during the 4 main "high" days. There are also "composed cantorial" settings, the most famous one of these by Max Janowski, which is quite beautiful. We generally do the Janowski for the "first time" on each day of the big services, but then we use this folk one after that.
The translation is as follows:
Avinu Malkeinu! be gracious and answer us, for we have little merit.
Treat us generously and with kindness, and be our help.
The words, "Avinu Malkeinu" translate as "Our Father, our King". |
