This the postlude for the Mass of 3rd sunday of Advent, the only sunday of Advent where the organ was allowed to play in the parisian rite.
Do not look here for a bombastic french toccata : it's a piece in the spirit of the calm joy while Christmas approaches. It is written on the theme of "Conditor alme siderum", a gregorian hymn for the Advent.
It is quite a sectional piece, with whirling garlands, kinds of tintinabuli, and periodic quotations of "Conditor alme siderum". It ends ppp, calmly and mysteriously.
The first time I heard it, years ago,I was completely bored…and now it has become my preferred piece from Tournemire. So, if you are severely bored, all is normal :-) :-).
It's a good test for flutes : do you prefer those of St Omer or of Caen (for those heroic enough to listen to it not only once, but twice :-)) ?
PS : St Omer's mixture clearly did not like the transfert to CCH, but I found find no solution. Sorry.
