English composer Alan Ridout (1934–1996) was educated at the Royal College of Music with Gordon Jacob and Herbert Howells. He taught at four universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, and for more than 20 years was a professor at the Royal College of Music. Ridout composed many works in all forms: symphonies, operas, ballets, chamber and instrumental works, vocal works, and much church music.
