Prelude and Fugue No. 1, Opus 913

From the composer: "This cycle of nine preludes and fugues (2011/13) explores this familiar genre in a variety of manifestations. The preludes explore varied musical characters, serving as foils for their fugues. The fugues likewise take different approaches to the formal structure; no two follow the same plan.

Prelude and Fugue No. 1 (2011) was commissioned by the 2011 Boston Pipe Organ Encounter. It is dedicated to composer James Woodman, whose continual reinvigoration of traditional forms is a consistent inspiration. A perky prelude in triple meter precedes a deliberate fugue. Both are based on the same musical material."
