Michael Johnston (1956–2021) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and educated at Mars Hill College and Westminster Choir College in piano, organ, and composition. In 1983, with John Apple, he founded Michael's Music Service, a firm specializing in reprints of historical organ music.

“Triumphant Procession” (1989) was written for Karen Hite Jacob, organist of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte, North Carolina for their then-new II/32 Brunzema organ (op. 28, 1988).
