Healey Willan (1880-1968)
Born in Balham England, Willan became organist-choirmaster of Toronto's largest church, St. Paul's, Bloor Street, but it was his royalties as a composer which allowed him to leave "low church" St. Paul's in 1921 and to become Precentor of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Toronto).
The Prelude on Aberystwyth (1956) is part of a set of thirty preludes written in the composer's mid-seventies. They show remarkable creativity and contain some of Willan's finest writing in the genre. The teatment of this lovely Welsh hymn tune by Joseph Parry is concentrated and meditative, the tune passing amoung the voices phrase by phrase.
Joseph Parry (b. Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1841; d. Penarth, Glamorganshire, 1903) was born into a poor but musical family. Although he showed musical gifts at an early age, he was sent to work in the puddling furnaces of a steel mill at the age of nine. His family immigrated to a Welsh settlement in Danville, Pennsylvania in 1854, where Parry later started a music school. He traveled in the United States and in Wales, performing, studying, and composing music, and he won several Eisteddfodau (singing competition) prizes.
I found Augustine's sample just right for this piece;
