Description:
Variations on "Veni Creator Spiritus," composed in 1955 by Gabriel Verschraegen (1918-1981).

Verschraegen studied at the Lemmens Institute in Mechelen and at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent with Flor Peeters and Toussaint De Sutter.

In 1944 he was appointed titulaire at St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent. In 1950 he was teacher of organ at the Royal Conservatory in that city. In 1962 he became director of the Music Academy in Lokeren and in 1968 director of the Royal Conservatory in Ghent. Among his pupils in the organ class, including: Stanislas Deriemaeker , Roger Deruwe, Jo Eetvelde, Lucien Goethals, Johan Huys , Karel Paukert, and Dirk Herman Verschraegen, Edward De Spirit.

Moderato - the theme is played on the 8' & 4' foundation stops of the Grand Orgue in canon.

Allegro moderato - a little "toccatina" on the 8' & 2' flutes of the Recit.

Andante - melody in the left hand on the Basson of the Positif, against the Flute and Viole of the Recit.

Scherzando - a little scamper, obviously depicting the great wind (IMHO!), played on the Flutes 8' & 2' plus Plein Jeu of the Recit. Includes some chords in the pedal, which is coupled to the Recit.

Moderato - a 2-part dialogue between the 8' & 4' Flutes on the Positif against the Hautbois of the Recit.

Allegro - LH on the Recit, using the Fonds & Hautbois, with the RH on the GO, using a pungent combination of reeds, mixtures, etc. I was also able to combine the Cornet of the Recit, since it stops at middle-C. The Pedale, also with reeds answers the GO.

Maestoso - Grand Choeur (This is the "real" version of the instrument, so, no 32'!) ;-)

I first heard this piece (years ago) played by Roy Massey at Hereford. The music was hard to find, but it's in Vol. II of "Cantantibus Organis," and is published by Ed. Van Rossum of Utrecht.

A little something for Whitsunday!

HAPPY PENTECOST!
