Chromecast

I use a chromecast and google home assistant to play music on my living room stereo. The ai limitations of home assistant can be amusing and irritating when trying to define tracks to play by voice command. The reason i mention it here is because i can't cast from cbb through my android phone (not voice command). Anyone else having similar problems or solutions using an android phone and chromecast?

RE: Chromecast

I use SONOS speakers and Windows 10 "Cast to Device". It only works if I cast a file (MP3,WAV, etc.). My playlist can be recorded as an MP3 file and cast. If I try to cast directly from a website (like CB) it won't work. I've tried a couple of third party software downloads that claim to be able to cast from the web, but they don't work either. There are boxes available that allow whatever you play through them to be cast, but they are expensive and sometimes fail quickly. There is a system called SKAA (https://www.skaastore.com/products/receivers/) which claims to overcome the problems of other wireless methods, but I have no experience with it, the transmitters/receivers are costly and there isn't much user feedback available.

There is a CB user csw900 who has a website (https://midimusic.github.io) which gives a lot of good information about HTML5 audio. He may be able to give more specific advice about casting from a website. I've sent him a message asking for his insight.

RE: Chromecast

Hi

Thanks Bayless for your recommendation, but I am not sure I can help. I assume by "casting" you mean transmitting audio without wires. This is pretty easy, just connect your pc to Bluetooth speakers and all sounds from your pc will be output from the Bluetooth speakers. If the pc does not have built in Bluetooth you may need to get a usb Bluetooth adapter. This will not be hi-fi but the audios on CB are not hi-fi anyway.

If you mean streaming audio from one computer to another - this is also easy, just connect the two computers together on a network. It can be a wired or wireless network either will work. This is the better method because you will be able to control the source computer, and thus select the audio you want to play, from the destination computer.

As far as I know HTML5 has no special built in capability for doing this kind of work.

Personally I have never used Chromecast but I think it will be using the streaming method.
I think Chromecast is a Google product which may work only with their other products.

RE: Chromecast

Thanks for the messages. I used to use blue tooth, but moved to a Chromecast since it is compatible with the google home assistant so I can request music to be played by talking to it.
Since this is plugged in, and since other sites allow me to cast to it, I was wondering what it was about other sites compared to CBB that makes the casting an option.
I think I've confirmed it isn't my mistake, rather something inherent in the design of the site.
Perhaps I just need to go back to the blue tooth and plug this into another channel on the stereo.

RE: Chromecast

Thanks csw900 for your response. Chromecast is designed to work with Google products.

Unclegally, what sites do you go to that work? Are you able to tell google home assistant to go to contrebombarde.com and play music on your computer but not on your receiver? If playing on the computer doesn't work it's probably because the other sites are set up like a radio station (tune-in, pandora, etc.) and CB isn't set up that way.

RE: Chromecast

Hi again

I have just had a quick look at the source code for a CB page which can play music (player in top left hand corner).

I am not surprised it does not work with anything else. They have used yards of java script to make their own player. In fact the page is a complete mess from the point of view of understanding how it works. I am surprised it works at all. The do not use the normal HTML player which probably would work with Chromecast.

RE: Chromecast

Thanks. I feel i should qualify this some more. I can use home assistant to play music by verbal reqest but this is normally directed through my spotify account. My sons enjoy this streaming sevice. Google home assistant is rubbish at differetiating between an artist and composer since it is designed primarily to play tracks. Regarding casting from my android phone i can hit the cast button from sites like youtube or spotify. My dream would be to cast by verbal command tracks from cch, but failing that cast from it using my phone. I think i need to reinstall the Bluetooth adapter. Thanks for your comments. Simon.
